The DNA Series was inspired by Jackson’s realization that the very DNA which makes up all life, can be expressed as an image. These mixed media (digital print, watercolor and ink) pieces depict the micro and macro views of a single life form (Maize, Cotton, etc.) in the same frame causing the viewer to see the actual being and its molecular structure at the same time. These subjects are always nestled in the larger framework of our world, between the sun and sky and the earth beneath.
It should be noted that the nucleic acid sequence depicted is the ACTUAL sequence for the species in the image. The letters are A, C, G, and T, representing the four nucleotide bases of a DNA strand — adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine are used to show part of the landscape as well as the dna sequence for grass, maize or cotton, etc.
Each image is printed and embellished by hand then signed with Jackson’s distinctive thumbprint. They are each unique.
